Britannia is a Cambridge teacher training centre. In our Ipanema branch we offer the CELTA course for English teachers who seek an international qualification.

CELTA (Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults) awarded by the University of Cambridge ESOL department. It is the best known and most widely recognized initial qualification for teachers of ELT.
Although the course is designed for those with no previous experience, it is also suitable for those who have been teaching but have no formal training or qualification.
It aims at giving candidates a firm foundation in all areas of modern ELT which they can build on through further professional development.

CELTA Dates and Fees:

• R$ 4.025,00 (U$ 2500,00 e GBP 1550,00).* payable in up to 5 or 6 times for the part-time course and in 2 or 3 times for the full-time.
• The fee excludes the Cambridge Certification fee of around U$ 180,00, payable on week 2 of the course.
• Full time courses pay an extra R$ 60,00 for use of printing and full broad-band or wireless accessibility.

Britannia Celta Course Components

- Input sessions on language awareness (analyzing language from the learners´ perspective) and methodology with a strong emphasis on practical teaching skills.

- Teaching practice in groups of 5/6 trainees, with real students (not peer), followed by feedback sessions with the TP group and a tutor. Trainnees also receive a written report on their lesson.

- 4 assignments on practical issues related to the classroom.

Other features of the course

- Observation of experienced teachers

- Tutorials throughout the course to monitor progress

- Individualized support when necessary

- All course are assessed by an external moderator appointed by the University of Cambridge to ensure to quality control.

There is no final examination: assessment is based on continuous evaluation. The main focus is on practical teaching ability but you will also be assessed on your written assignments and professional development which includes punctuality, record-keeping, your relationship with students and
colleagues.
Results
The Britannia CELTA results have been outstanding: our average pass rates between 2000 and Feb 2009 were 98% PASSES with 15% As and 45% Bs. The world wide average of As and Bs is 25%.

The course takes place in our Britannia Ipanema branch, a beautiful house from the early 1900s in the heart of Ipanema, where all facilities are available, such as computers with full access to internet and interactive whiteboards in the classrooms. There is also study material available to all teachers

I have been an English teacher for 13 years now and although the CELTA is meant to be an initial qualification for people with little or no previous teaching experience, it has been a watershed in my professional life. I had only been in Brazil for two months and had previously finished a Masters in Education in the United States.The course was much more than I expected. At first, I thought of CELTA as a certificate that would open doors to other courses in Brazil as well as in other countries. I had made up my mind to take it, mainly to improve my CV. What I couldn`t imagine was the change it would make in the way I teach, clearly seen even when I use methods different from the communicative approach.
